A registered nurse with dental experience typically works in a dental clinic or office and provides nursing care and assistance to patients undergoing dental procedures. The job description may include the following responsibilities:
1. Patient Assessment: Perform initial patient assessments, including taking medical history, vital signs, and evaluating the patient's overall health status. Assess and document any specific dental concerns or conditions.
2. Preparing Patients: Prepare patients for dental procedures by explaining the procedure, addressing their concerns, and ensuring their comfort. Assist in positioning patients and preparing the dental operatory.
3. Dental Procedure Assistance:
Provide chairside assistance to the dentist during dental procedures. Prepare and handle dental instruments, materials, and medications. Maintain a sterile field and assist in dental instrument sterilization and infection control.
4. Patient Education: Educate patients on proper oral hygiene techniques, dental care instructions, and post-operative care. Provide information on preventive dental care and promote oral health.
5. Medication Administration: Administer prescribed medications, local anesthetics, or sedatives as directed by the dentist. Monitor patients for any adverse reactions or complications.
6. Documentation and Record-Keeping: Accurately document patient information, dental procedures performed, medications administered, and any complications or observations during treatment. Maintain patient records and ensure confidentiality.
7. Dental Radiography: Take and process dental X-rays as directed by the dentist. Ensure proper radiation safety protocols and maintain X-ray equipment.
8. Emergency Response:
Assist in managing dental emergencies or adverse reactions during procedures. Perform basic life support techniques if required until additional help arrives.
9. Clinic Support: Collaborate with other healthcare professionals, dental assistants, and administrative staff to ensure efficient clinic operations. Help with scheduling appointments, managing inventory, and maintaining a clean and organized work environment.
10. Continuing Education: Stay updated with the latest advancements in dental nursing practices, techniques, and regulations. Attend educational workshops, seminars, or conferences to enhance professional knowledge and skills.
