Position Overview:
The Special Education Teacher collaborates with ASD’s Student Support Services Department and a multidisciplinary team of educators to develop and implement individualized programs for students with intellectual and developmental delays/disabilities. Student programs focus on academic, social, and daily living/life skills, with the goal of helping students fulfill their personal and academic potential while attaining as much independence as possible. This approach balances student needs, available resources, and instructional planning to develop student programs that maximize opportunities for students to participate with same-aged peers and be full and valued members of the ASD community.
The Middle School Special Education Teacher is part of the Middle School and whole-school Learning Support and Student Services Teams, supervised by the Director of Student Services.
Instructional Responsibilities:
1. Maintain a safe, nurturing learning environment
2. A full-time teaching load supporting a small group of students with a student-to-adult ratio that averages 3:1
3. Plan and implement individualized programs addressing academic, social, and daily living/life skills
4. Provide case management for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities, including:
1. writing Individual Education Plans and progress reports
2. creating transition plans and behavior support plans
3. briefing ASD employees about student needs as appropriate
4. coordinating with related services such as Occupational Therapist, Speech-Language Therapist, School Psychologist, Counselor, and community specialists
- Establish strong relationships and open communication systems with all stakeholders
- Maintain strong relationships and communication with subject teachers and specialists, collaborating and providing support to facilitate the inclusion of students with typically developing peers, and monitoring student progress and adjustment in these settings
- Create and manage student schedules, including occupational therapy, speech-language therapy and inclusion into grade level and specialist classes
- Maintain close communication and collaboration with parents to build strong home-school relationships and facilitate generalization of skills and continuity of care
- Provide training, leadership, and supervision for instructional assistants to maximize their effectiveness in supporting students within small group and inclusion settings
- Provide professional learning and training to ASD employees and community members that fosters greater inclusion of students with more significant needs

Required Qualifications:
1. Minimum of two years of experience teaching students with intellectual and developmental disabilities in an inclusive setting
2.
Minimum of bachelor’s degree in special education with a focus on developmental and intellectual disabilities or a masters in special education (if undergraduate degree is in another field)
3. Current teaching certification in special education
4. Demonstrated ability to facilitate the integration of students with intellectual and developmental disabilities into a general education setting
5. Strong knowledge base about effective special education interventions and strategies for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities
Preferred Qualifications:
1. Master’s degree in special education

Actively support ASD Student Safeguarding efforts by identifying and proposing solutions to safeguarding concerns for individuals with whom they come into contract

6. Experience leading small group work with students that have a range of diverse learning needs
7. Proficiency in creating schedules that align instructional staffing with student needs to support integration

9. Strong technology skills and ability to use assistive and adaptive technology to facilitate student success

Terms of Employment:
General working hours are from 7:45 am - 3:45 pm, Monday through Thursday and 7:45 am - 12:45 pm (on site) & 2:30 pm - 3:45 pm (remote/flexible) on Fridays. In some cases, flexibility with work hours is requested to meet the needs of the role.
